I just received the following in one of those forwarded emails. Not sure if it works but it sure looks believable. Good luck!

Blood Donor No More
I am devastated.
2 years ago, I found out that I had hyperactive thyroid (read about it here) and was on medication for 2 years until February this year. While I was on Carbimazole (medication to treat Hyperthyroidism), the Doctors told me that I can't donate blood. Now that my Thyroid is back to normal and I'm off medication - I decided to call the Blood Bank and check when I can start donating blood again. The Doctor asked me what was the cause of my hyperthyroidism and I told him it's genetic. He explained that it falls under the autoimmune category and that means that I cannot donate blood - for life.
I have never believed in donating money or material goods so I always looked forward to donating blood, to giving life... but I can no longer do that and I'm really disappointed.
